5 Reasons to Choose Jarrah Honey From Western Australia

July 29, 2025

When it comes to honey, there’s ordinary — and then there’s Jarrah honey.

At Bee Happy, we’ve spent decades working with Western Australia’s native trees and wildflower species, and if there’s one variety that continues to steal the spotlight, it’s our certified organic Jarrah honey.

Why? Because Jarrah honey isn’t just tasty. It’s rare, rich in natural compounds, and backed by science. Whether you’re a long-time honey lover or just starting your wellness journey, here’s why this golden WA gem deserves pride of place in your pantry.

1. It’s exclusive to WA

You won’t find Jarrah honey made anywhere else in the world. It comes from the Jarrah tree (Eucalyptus marginata), a species native to the ancient forests of Western Australia’s southwest. These trees only flower once every two years — and even then, flowering depends heavily on rainfall, temperature, and seasonal cycles.

That makes Jarrah honey incredibly rare, and production volumes can vary dramatically year to year. When we say it’s a limited release, we mean it — it’s truly one of the most regionally distinctive honeys in the world.

2. It’s naturally powerful

Jarrah honey contains exceptionally high levels of antimicrobial activity. This is often referred to as Total Activity (TA), a measure of its antimicrobial strength. This activity is primarily due to its natural hydrogen peroxide content — which acts as a natural antibacterial and antifungal agent. Our Total Activity rating is scientifically quantified in laboratory testing and expressed as T/A 35+ or higher, signifying the honey’s potent, clinically validated antimicrobial efficacy.

It’s often compared to Manuka honey for its therapeutic qualities, but many prefer Jarrah for its smooth, caramel-like flavour and lower sugar content. Studies have found Jarrah honey effective in wound healing, sore throat relief, and gut health — thanks to its powerful mix of antioxidants, phenolic acids, and low glucose levels.

At Bee Happy, our Jarrah honey is certified organic, unheated, and minimally filtered, so all those beneficial enzymes and bioactive compounds stay intact. Just the way nature (and the bees) intended.

 3. It’s sustainably harvested

We’re passionate about preserving the health of our bees — and the biodiversity of the landscapes they thrive in. Our hives are carefully placed in remote, native bushland across WA, far away from commercial crops or chemical sprays.

We harvest only when the bees have surplus stores, and never take more than they can naturally replenish. It’s all part of our commitment to ethical, sustainable beekeeping that protects both the environment and our hardworking pollinators.

4. It’s versatile (and downright delicious)

Jarrah honey has a rich, deep flavour with notes of burnt toffee and molasses — making it perfect for both sweet and savoury dishes.

Drizzle it over Greek yogurt, add it to a marinade, or serve it alongside hard cheeses and fresh figs for an elevated grazing board. It’s also a beautiful addition to homemade dressings, herbal teas, or simply spooned straight from the jar. No judgment here.

 5. You’re supporting local

When you choose Bee Happy, you’re supporting a small, family-run apiary that’s been producing certified organic WA honey since 1958. We’re based in Toodyay in the Avon Valley — and every jar we sell is filled, labelled, and packed right here in Western Australia.

We’ve grown from a handful of hives to over 400 — but we’ve stayed true to our roots, prioritising quality over quantity and community over corporate. So when you buy a jar of Jarrah, you’re not just choosing exceptional honey. You’re supporting local jobs, local bees, and local land.
